ROMANO-BRITISH ENAMELLED DOG BROOCH.
ROMANO-BRITISH ENAMELLED DOG BROOCH.
£295.00
A beautiful Roman zoomorphic bronze brooch in the form of a running dog. The body is inlaid with green champlevé enamel, the eye picked out in vivid orange. The form of the dog is clearly influenced by Celtic art. In ancient Britain, the dog was connected to the Celtic divinity Nodons, who was associated with healing, hunting, and dogs. The brooch is in excellent condition with all the enamel remaining, slight areas of corrosion on the ear and tail, typically the hinged iron pin is missing.
Dimensions: 42 mm x 17 mm.
