FRAGMENT OF A ROMAN SAMIAN WARE BOWL: VICTORY. GAUL, AD 70-85.
FRAGMENT OF A ROMAN SAMIAN WARE BOWL: VICTORY. GAUL, AD 70-85.
A beautiful fragment of a high quality Roman samian ware bowl. This shard dates to circa AD 70-85, and was produced in Southern Gaul. The form of the bowl is Dragendorff 29 in the style of the potter Mommo. The fragment depicts a winged Victory holding a wreath within a medallion, framed by a wreathed border. The field is decorated with a foliate pattern comprised of tendrils and acorns. This shard has the instantly recognisable bright orange fabric and hard glossy slip typical of early samian ware produced in Southern Gaul. Amazing to think that food was probably shared from this bowl around a wealthy Roman dining table! A highly evocative item which would make a wonderful display piece.
Dimensions: 58 mm x 46 mm.
