A superb example of this classic Roman Republican coin, the reverse depicting a bucolic scene of a ploughman with his yolk of oxen, turning the earth and planting grain - represented by the figure of Ceres on the obverse. This type was issued to pay Sulla's troops following the brutal civil war. All veterans were promised a healthy final payment and land to farm - perhaps the image on the reverse was designed to appeal to those soldiers. A beautiful specimen - well centred with vivid iridescent toning.
