Obverse: P FONTEIVS P F CAPITO III VIR, Helmeted and draped bust of Mars facing right, trophy over shoulder.

Reverse: MN FONT TR MIL (MN and NT in monogram), horseman galloping right, about to spear warrior below who is attacking a third, disarmed, combatant.

Diameter: 19 mm. Weight: 3.9 g.

An attractive Republican silver denarius, sharply struck with areas of golden toning. This moneyer was the nephew of Manius Fonteius and a close friend of Cicero. The design of the reverse probably depicts the military exploits of his uncle whilst governor of Gallia Narbonensis from 76-73 BC.
