ANONYMOUS SILVER DENARIUS, 86 BC.
ANONYMOUS SILVER DENARIUS, 86 BC.
£195.00
Obverse: Head of Apollo facing right, wreathed with oak, thunderbolt below.
Reverse: Jupiter in quadriga right, brandishing thunderbolt.
RRC: 350A/2. Sear: 266. CRR: 723. RSC: 226. [Rome, 86 BC].
Diameter: 19 mm. Weight: 3.5 g.
A very sharply struck example with exquisite rainbow toning. Clearly connected by design with the signed denarii of Gargonius, Ogulnius, and Vergilius, the reason for this unusually late issue of anonymous coins remains unclear. A near-perfect specimen, extremely fine and perfectly centred.
