COPPER AS OF CLAUDIUS, ROME, AD 42.

£195.00

Obverse: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P, Bare head of Claudius facing left.

Reverse: CONSTANTIAE AVGVSTI S C, Constantia, helmeted standing left, right hand raised, holding sceptre in left.

RIC: 111. Sear: 1858. BMCRE: 199. [Rome, AD 42].

Diameter: 30 mm. Weight: 11.5 g.

A very nice copper As of Claudius, struck on a large flan, with a very detailed portrait. The reverse depicts the goddess Constantia (constancy), who only appears on the coinage of Claudius. The coin has an excellent, even-black patina and good surfaces, slight scratching to the obverse portrait which doesn’t really detract from this exceptional example.
