An excellent quality brass sestertius of Commodus with a detailed portrait of the emperor - struck in Rome when he was 22 years old. His father and co-emperor Marcus Aurelius had died 3 years before and Commodus’ sole reign had begun to prove extremely unpopular. In the year this coin was struck an unsuccessful assassination attempt was made on the emperor by members of the Senate. A beautiful example with good detail and an attractive dark patina – struck on a large flan with a few edge knocks and dents.
