A stunning copper-alloy book-clasp dating to the 13th-14th century. Originally this would have been one of a pair of clasps fixed to the leather binding of a large medieval book, and used to securely fasten it, protecting the pages from light and dust. The back of the clasp is fashioned from sheet metal, with an opening at the back to accommodate a leather strap. The front section has been cast and finely engraved in the form of a feline head with lentoid eyes, elongated ears, and a long protruding tongue, forming the fastener of the clasp. The flat rear and middle section of the clasp is engraved with an attractive geometric pattern. This piece is in wonderful condition with absolutely no wear or damage, the patina an exquisite emerald green.
