SILVER DIOBOL OF MESEMBRIA, THRACE, 450-350 BC.
SILVER DIOBOL OF MESEMBRIA, THRACE, 450-350 BC.
£125.00
Obverse: Crested Corinthian helmet facing.
Reverse: META, between four spokes of a wheel, surrounded by a border of radiating lines.
Sear: 1673. SNG BMC: Black Sea 268 ff. [Mesembria, 450-350 BC].
Diameter: 10 mm. Weight: 1.3 g.
An extremely fine example with deep iridescent toning, and sharp detail. Judging from the artistic and archaeological evidence, the Corinthian helmet was widely favoured by warriors in the Archaic and early Classical period. The toning on the reverse has an almost psychedelic quality. A small but perfectly formed piece of Classical art.
