[Nabataea, AD 40-70]. Diameter: 16 mm. Weight: 4.0 g. A scarce drachm of the Nabataean kingdom of North Arabia. Once a loose collection of nomadic Bedouin tribes that roamed the Arabian deserts, the Nabataean kingdom became extraordinarily wealthy, controlling trade between Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. The capital city Petra was located at the centre of several important trade routes, including the Incense Route, which supplied myrrh and frankincense to Rome and beyond.
